The Scarborough boys and girls indoor track teams got their seasons off to a good start by finishing second at last month’s Bowdoin Relays at Bowdoin College in Brunswick.

In addition to the strong team finish, the Storm boys won five relays (shot put, high jump, pole vault, high hurdle shuttle and low hurdle shuttle) at the meet.

Five members of the Storm boys squad also qualified for the state championships at the meet. Brad Nakanishi qualified in the pole vault with a top height of 13-6, Brian Woodbury qualified in the shot put with a top distance of 44-3, Billy Gorman also qualified in the shot put with a top distance of 43-7, Alex Dulac qualified in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6-1 and Sam Chick qualified in the triple jump with a top distance of 39 feet.

On the girls side, the Storm saw seven members of the squad qualify for the state championships. Melissa Dellatore qualified in the mile with a time of 5:44.69, Whitney Chamberlain also qualified in the mile with a time of 5:55.86, Catie Funk qualified in the shot put with a top distance of 33-6 and Lily Parenteau qualified in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4-10.

But it was in the pole vault that the Scarborough girls had some of their biggest successes. The Storm saw three athletes qualify for the state championships at the event. Kira Gordon qualified at 8-6, Devon Leighton also qualified at 8-6 and Sarah Gordon qualified at 8-0.
