PORTLAND — The Holiday Inn by the Bay on Spring Street has a new owner.

Bangor-based Lafayette Hotels announced May 11 that it had acquired the hotel from Harper Hotels of Vermont.

The hotel, which opened in 1973 and is Maine’s largest, has been approved by InterContinental Hotels Group to keep the Holiday Inn brand. Plans for the hotel include renovation of guest rooms and various other improvements, according to the company. Lafayette Hotels plans to rehire all employees; long-time general manager Gus Tillman will remain in charge.

“Over the past 36 years, Gus Tillman and his staff have built a high-quality hotel and convention operation with a great reputation. We are pleased to follow in that tradition,” said Peter Daigle, the chief operating officer for Lafayette. Tillman has been awarded the Maine Innkeeper of the Year award twice.

The Holiday Inn has 239 guest rooms, 13 function rooms and a 12,000-square-foot exhibit hall.

Lafayette Hotels operates 22 hotels in Maine, three in New Hampshire and one in Michigan.

“The Holiday Inn by the Bay is one of the premiere hotel properties in southern Maine and it fits well with our portfolio of hotels,”  Daigle said.
