FREEPORT — A Brunswick woman was hospitalized at Maine Medical Center in Portland last week after the vehicle she was driving sideswiped another vehicle on Interstate 295 in Freeport. The accident stalled northbound traffic for nearly three hours during the afternoon hours of July 22.
Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Lauren Rousseau, 43, is believed to have lost control of her GMC Envoy while passing another vehicle heading northbound near Exit 25. After colliding with the other vehicle, Rousseau’s SUV flipped into the nearby woods before ending up overturned on the highway.
Rousseau’s vehicle soon caught on fire, but McCausland said Freeport rescue crews were able to remove her. She was then transported to Maine Medical Center with what has been described as non-life threatening injuries.
The vehicle Rousseau struck was driven by 29-year-old Floyd Skelton III, of Dresden. Skelton’s passengers included his wife, Rachel, and their two small children. His vehicle also caught fire after the crash, but police said the family of four were treated for minor bumps and bruises before being released from Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.
On Wednesday, McCausland said police are still investigating why Rousseau lost control of her vehicle.
