PEAKS ISLAND — Thomas James “Tom” Quigg, 91, died Aug. 10 at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Scarborough after a long illness.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., March 23, 1918, he was one of eight children of Sarah and Cornelius Quigg. After his mother died in the 1918 flu epidemic, he was raised by his aunt Theresa and his uncle James Storan.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps.
He worked as a machinist for Ford Instrument Co., and later as a foreman of machine building and maintenance at Bridgeport Fittings in Connecticut.
After retiring, he and his wife moved to Peaks Island. A member of the Peaks Island Lions Club since 1986, he was an outspoken member of the Peaks Island community and was given the honorary title of “Mayor of Peaks Island.”
Survivors include his wife, Elaine Quigg; his step-daughter, Elaine Ezzard of Topsham and Peaks Island, and his step-son, James Kossuth of Saco and Peaks Island; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held last week.
Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland.
