PORTLAND — Project Canopy, the city of Portland and Maine Audubon Society are developing a project working with area birders to monitor changes in Evergreen Cemetery’s bird communities.
“We’re encouraging experienced birders to volunteer their time and record bird observations while walking and then to report their findings to Cornell’s eBird site,” Project Canopy director Jan Santerre said, referring to the birding Web site developed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society. The site can be found at: www.ebird.org.
In order to participate, birders will be asked to walk sampling areas with project coordinators, who will discuss the protocol while teaching about the planned management activities. The introductory walks will be held at 5 p.m. March 29 and 5 p.m. April 1 beginning at the south side of the ponds in Evergreen Cemetery.
