RANGELEY — Police in Rangeley say they have arrested a New Hampshire man on charges he failed to register as a sex offender in his home state.
Police say 34-year-old Jerome Carter of Claremont, N.H., was arrested Saturday on a New Hampshire warrant that charges him with contempt of court, failure to register as a sex offender, and being a fugitive from justice.
Police officer Jared Austin says that after Carter was arrested on the New Hampshire warrant he was charged with failing to register as a sex offender in Maine.
Rangeley Police Chief Dennis Leahy told the Sun Journal newspaper Carter has a history of violent sexual assaults on girls under 16 in New Hampshire and Vermont.
Carter is being held at the Sommerset County Jail.
