The annual Damariscotta Pumpkinfest & Regatta, continuing through Monday, is really about community fun and fundraising. But the pumpkins everywhere — including on the water and flying through the air — make it look like a celebration of the big gourd.

Events Saturday included the Giant Pumpkin Parade through downtown Damariscotta and a pumpkin pie eating contest, as well as Fireside Tales at the Skidompha Library and the New Moon Ball in the evening.

The big event today, the Pumpkin Boat Regatta, kicks off at 11 a.m., when huge, hollowed-out pumpkins, some with motors attached, will carry racers across the Damariscotta River.

Also today, there will be pumpkin catapulting and chunking (in which pumpkins are hurled using air guns) starting at 9 a.m. at Trescott’s Farm in Nobleboro.

On Monday, pumpkins will be dropped from a 200-foot crane starting at 10 a.m. at Round Top Farm.
