Entering today’s high school boys’ hockey regional semifinals, there is only one team seeded lower than fourth, that being No. 6 Bangor in Eastern Class A.
All of the other top seeds moved on in the Class A quarterfinals — and one in Class B.
There were no surprising results in Tuesday’s games. Even Bangor’s win over No. 3 Gray-New Gloucester/Poland was not unexpected, since the Rams played a much tougher schedule.
No shockers are expected today, either, but keep an eye on that Falmouth-Biddeford game, along with York against Cape Elizabeth.
Here’s a look at the matchups:
WESTERN CLASS A
The Colisee, Lewiston
No. 3 Marshwood/Traip (17-2) vs. No. 2 Thornton Academy (14-5), noon.
The Hawks are a wonderful underdog story, but they have not faced a team close to Thornton’s talent this year. The Trojans began the year with an explosive offense and now have a strong defense to match, holding opponents scoreless for the last 14 periods.
No. 4 Falmouth (10-6-3) vs. No. 1 Biddeford (16-0-3), 2 p.m.
The undefeated Tigers feature the nearly unstoppable line of Brady Fleurent, Bryan Dallaire and Tyler Audie. Falmouth has shown the ability for an upset, depending on which Yachtsmen team shows up.
WESTERN CLASS B
Portland Ice Arena
No. 3 Cape Elizabeth (13-5) vs. No. 2 York (13-5), 5 p.m.
The Capers are the only Class B team to beat Greely this year, but they have not figured out York, losing 1-0 and 5-3. The Wildcats, defending regional champions, have rolled over their last six opponents by a combined score of 49-5.
No. 4 Yarmouth (10-8) vs. No. 1 Greely (14-3-1), 8 p.m.
The Clippers pulled an upset over Camden Hills last year to reach the regional final. Yarmouth is an underdog again. The Rangers are strong on defense, allowing more than two goals only three times (all Greely losses). Greely beat Yarmouth 4-2 two weeks ago.
EASTERN CLASS A
The Colisee, Lewiston
No. 6 Bangor (11-8) vs. No. 2 St. Dominic (13-4-1), 6 p.m. The Saints look like the dominant team on paper, but Bangor’s two losses to the Saints have been fairly close, 4-1 and 4-2. Unless the Saints are caught looking ahead, they should get by a third time.
No. 4 Waterville (9-9-1) vs. No. 1 Lewiston (15-1-2), 8 p.m.
A Waterville-Lewiston game sounds like a marquee matchup, but the Panthers are down this year and the veteran Blue Devils are loaded, anchored by goalie Cam Poussard (0.73 goals-against average). Lewiston easily beat Waterville twice this season, 11-0 and 5-1.
EASTERN CLASS B
Sukee Arena, Winslow
No. 3 Old Town (11-6-1) vs. No. 2 Houlton/Hodgdon (15-3), 5 p.m.
Houlton features a strong team, with losses only to Brewer (twice) and Greely. After routing Old Town 8-1 in December, Houlton squeezed by the Coyotes 3-2 last month.
No. 4 Lawrence (8-9-2) vs. No. 1 Brewer (17-0-1), 8 p.m.
Lawrence beat Presque Isle on Tuesday, but now has to face the favorite to repeat as state champion. Brewer won the two previous encounters, 6-0 and 8-4.
