PORTLAND — Time to clean out your medicine cabinets.

Ecomaine will host a collection day for prescription and other unused or expired drugs on April 30 at the regional incinerator and recycling facility on Blueberry Road, off outer Congress Street.

The 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. event is part of the Drug Take-Back Program sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

The free collection is open to individuals, health-care facilities and others who want to dispose of medications that pose a threat to public health and the environment.

The goal is to reduce opportunities for prescriptions and other drugs to be misused or disposed of improperly. Public officials advise against flushing drugs down the toilet because it’s not safe for drinking water supplies and wildlife.

Similar drug collections are being held April 30 at police departments across the state, including Sanford and Westbrook.
