CAPE ELIZABETH – The Cape Elizabeth boys tennis team is just one match away from the state championship finals.

On Monday, the No. 2-seeded Capers had little trouble dispatching No. 3 Lincoln Academy 4-1 in a semifinal match to set up a date with top-seeded Falmouth in the Class B West regional final on June 8, a match that was played after the Current’s deadline.

The Capers were led to the win on Monday by Ross Sherman, who captured his singles match with Lincoln’s Brandon Blake in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Cape’s Satchel McCarthy also captured a straight-set singles win, beating out Daniel Mayer, 6-1, 6-1.

The Capers’ Matt Gilman had a tough time in his singles match with Jordan Friedland, losing 6-4, 7-5.

But the Capers sealed the win in doubles, with Ben Morse and Sam Sherman beating out Chauncey Devin and Zach Hager, 6-0, 6-2 and Reid Douty and Sean Donegan getting a straight set win over Jeff Chaney and Mike McCormick, 6-0, 6-1.

After the match, Cape coach Andrew Strout said he liked what he saw from his players on Monday. “In this match I saw the focus from all seven players that we need going into the regional final on Wednesday,” he said.
