Holiday weekend traffic along the Maine Turnpike was down from last year, but was higher than projections made by turnpike officials.
The Maine Turnpike Authority says traffic volumes Friday through Monday at the York toll plaza at the southern end of the turnpike were down 4.3 percent compared with the Fourth of July weekend in 2010. Officials were expecting a drop of 5.4 percent.
For the full length of the 109-mile toll highway, traffic was up on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. But the traffic count was down sharply on Monday, resulting in an overall decline of 2.9 percent for the entire weekend.
