PORTLAND — A $50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the person who shot a Mercy Hospital security guard nearly three years ago.

James Angelo was shot while at work in the early morning hours of Sept. 7, 2008. He was walking in the parking lot on the Winter Street side of the hospital. He was transported to Maine Medical Center, where he died.

Police are seeking help from the public in finding Angelo’s assailant and will hold a news conference at 1 p.m. today at the police department. The reward offer expires Dec. 31, 2011.

Similar rewards have been offered in the past. The reward is being renewed by Mercy Hospital and Maine Medical Center. Both hospitals are in the city’s West End neighborhood.

Anyone with information may call the police department’s Criminal Investigations Division at 874-8524 or the anonymous tip line at 874-8584.
