PORTLAND — Portland’s Sudanese community is inviting all Mainers to join in a marathon celebration Saturday to mark the independence of South Sudan.

The southern region of Sudan will become the world’s newest nation Saturday, the result of years of civil war and a vote in January to form a separate country. Portland has one of the largest communities of refugees from the civil wars in southern Sudan.

The daylong celebration on Saturday begins at Monument Square at 10 a.m. with the raising of the South Sudan flag. Participants will march to the Portland Exposition Building on Park Avenue for ceremonies and speeches, followed by African foods, music and dancing. The Expo celebration will be open to the public from noon until midnight.
