BOOTHBAY — A head-on collision on Route 27 in Boothbay Tuesday killed two women in their 60s and left a third hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office identified the people involved in the Tuesday afternoon crash.

Mechelle Spencer, 66, of Southport Island was driving a 2009 Dodge Durango south on Route 27 when she crossed over the center line and collided with a northbound sport utility vehicle, a 2009 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Sherrill Mansir, 61, of Pittston.

Witnesses told police that Spencer was driving erratically just before the 4:30 p.m. crash, and even went off the road moments before the collision.

Spencer was killed, as was Elaine Robinson, 66, of Sidney, a passenger in the car driven by Mansir. Mansir was extricated from the wreckage and taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with serious injuries.

A 2007 Honda Civic driven northbound by Phiilip McGuire, 34, of New Jersey, also was damaged when it crashed into the other cars but he and his passenger were not hurt.

Lincoln County Lt. Rand Maker said in a release that there was no evidence that excessive speed or alcohol was involved in the crash. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 882-7332.

Investigators are still trying to determine who was and who was not wearing seatbelts, Maker said.
