BURLINGTON, Vt. – Spencer Abbott had three goals and two assists, and the University of Maine men’s hockey team rode a four-goal third period to a 6-4 win over Hockey East rival Vermont at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Maine trailed 3-2 entering the third, but Vermont’s H.T. Lenz took a head-butting major at 4:56 to give the Black Bears an extended power play.
Mark Anthoine scored the equalizer at 8:54, and Abbott put Maine ahead 24 seconds later.
Abbott and Joey Diamond added goals in the next five minutes. The Catamounts scored a power-play goal with two-tenths of a second left.
Maine, which improved to 5-6-2 overall and 2-5-1 in Hockey East, also got a goal and three assists from Brian Flynn and three assists from Will O’Neill. Dan Sullivan made 29 saves as the Black Bears were outshot 33-20.
Goals by Flynn and Abbott gave the Black Bears a 2-1 lead after one period, but Lenz and Drew MacKenzie answered for Vermont in the second period.
Connor Brickley also scored for Vermont, which fell to 3-9-1 overall and 1-7-1 in the conference.
The teams meet again at 7 p.m. today.
