Cumberland resident honored by Boston Globe

Cumberland’s John B. Hart, a senior at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, N.H., was recently named a 2011-12 Boston Globe All-Scholastic athlete. Hart is the all-time single-season and career scoring leader for the PEA hockey team. He scored 35 goals and added 13 assists helping Exeter to a record of 18-2.

Maine Mountain Series begins

The USASA Maine Mountain Series will kick off its 14th season of regional competition for snowboarders and skiers of all ages at Sugarloaf on Saturday and Sunday. During the day Saturday, there will be a Slopestyle event for snowboarders and skiers. Saturday evening is the Sugarloaf Skirmish for snowboarders and skiers, the only USASA Winter X Games Rail Jam Qualifier in Maine. Sunday will bring Snowboard Giant Slalom and Slalom races. These USASA Maine regional championship events will ultimately determine the best snowboard and ski athletes in multiple age divisions, and will qualify athletes for the USASA Snowboard and Ski National Championships at Copper Mountain, Colo., in April. Swish-Out basketball tourney seeks teams

The 18th annual Dr. Noel Paradise Memorial Swish-Out and Junior Swish-Out Childhood Cancer Challenge, the longest running, continuous 3-on-3 benefit basketball tournament in the state, is seeking teams to participate in this year’s event, which will be held Sunday, Jan. 29. Major leaguer hosting Frozen Ropes class

South Portland’s Charlie Furbush, a member of the Seattle Mariners, will host a pitching class Jan. 21 at Frozen Ropes Training Center in Portland. Seacoast United offering new teams

Seacoast United Maine is entering a team in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) and the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) beginning this summer. Both teams are called the Seacoast United Mariners. Maine Premier Lacrosse offerings

Progressive instruction/games for beginning or less experienced players taught by Long Island Hall of Famer Coach J will be held Thursdays from 4 to 5 p.m. at Portland Sports Complex. There are also winter programs open for boys and girls in middle school and high school.
