HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) — A 13-year-old seventh-grade basketball player is taking 2,000 shots over eight days to raise money and honor the memory of his mother, who died of breast cancer.

Liam Viviano of Hampton Academy is starting today with his first shots at halftime at the Winnacunnet High School girls’ basketball game. The last shots are scheduled for halftime of the boys’ game on Jan. 20.

Viviano is asking people to donate a penny for each of his shots, or $20. Each shot he makes is worth an extra penny.

The Portsmouth Herald reports the proceeds will go to the Beyond the Rainbow Fund. It’s an organization founded by his mother, Anne- Marie Viviano, to help local cancer survivors who are uninsured or underinsured. Anne-Marie died in 2009 at age 45.
