Fourth- and fifth-graders at the Buxton Center Elementary School recently participated in a geography bee. Students who qualified for the final round were: fourth grade — Michelina Ruggieri, Lamaara Forrest, Lauren Jordan, and Logan Hiltz; fifth grade — Lucy Weyand, Regan McCleary, Rylan Neal, Brendan Sanphy, Wyatt Blanchette. Rylan Neal took top honors and was given the qualifying test for the state bee. Regan McCleary was runner-up. 

Stephanie Felt, a junior at Scarborough High School, has won first place in The Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Voice of Democracy contest in Maine, winning a $1500 scholarship and a free, five-day trip to Washington, D C. She will be competing at the national level for a $30,000 scholarship. 

The Maine Community Foundation offers nearly 450 scholarships that are available for students attending secondary, post-secondary and graduate schools as well as non-traditional programs. In 2011, more than $1.5 million in scholarships were awarded to 1,275 Maine students. A complete list of scholarships for the upcoming school year is available at www.mainecf.org.
