A canine cocktail party
Planet Dog’s 8th Annual Valentine’s Day Canine Cocktail Party will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Planet Dog Company Store, 211 Marginal Way.
The annual fundraising event will feature a popular dog kissing contest, free treats and beer and wine.
The longest, sloppiest buddy-to-owner kiss wins an assortment of Planet Dog’s best-sellers valued at $75.
The cost to enter the dog kissing contest is a $5 donation to the Planet Dog Foundation.

Basic computer skills class
The Portland Public Library will host a workshop Thursday for people who want to learn basic computer skills.
The workship will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday at the library.
Raminta Moore, a library technical aid at the Portland Public Library, will lead the workshop. She will cover topics such as the components of a computer, mousing exercises, how to scroll and how to navigate the web.

Valentine’s Day social
Coffee By Design is hosting a Valentine’s Day social from 10:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine.
Parents can sample and learn about Colombian coffee while their children make valentines, play coffee games, enjoy light snacks, and learn about the importance of building global relationships.
This event is free with paid museum admission.

Kindergarten registration
Portland Public Schools recently announced its schedule for kindergarten registration.
The Portland Public Schools will register kindergartners for the 2012-2013 school year during the weeks of Feb. 27 through March 2 and March 5 through 9. Registration takes place by appointment at the child’s neighborhood school.

Hellenic Society lecture
This week, the Hellenic Society of Maine will present its spring lecture, “The Patriarchate and the Greek Minority,” by Stavros Nashi.
The talk will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the University of Southern Maine’s Payson Smith Hall.

Artist talk

Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice is seeking individuals who are interested in volunteering to help home care patients and their families.
