BRUNSWICK — Bruce Gomberg, M.D., has recently joined Brunswick-based Coastal Orthopedics Sports Medicine as an orthopedic surgeon.

According to a news release, Dr. Gomberg special- izes in total and partial knee replacements, hip replacements, knee arthroscopy and fracture surgery.

He is an adjunct assistant professor at Dartmouth College School of Medicine. Gomberg is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, a member of the New England Orthopaedic Society and Maine State Orthopaedic Society. He most recently served at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta.

Gomberg is also the director of the Maine Orthopaedic Review, which has provided continuing orthopedic education for more than 50 years. Bringing a high degree of technical ability to his medical practice, Gomberg spent several years in research and design in the aerospace industry, most notably at Lockheed’s “Skunkworks” experimental aircraft facility.

“I designed several cockpits for airplanes and helicopters,” said Gomberg. “Believe it or not, my first job in that industry was designing the rear crew station for the Lockheed P-3 Orion submarine patrol plane, which was stationed right here in Brunswick.”

Gomberg earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware and a master’s degree from New Mexico State University. He earned an M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, and an internship and orthopedic surgery residency at West Virginia University Hospitals.
