BRUNSWICK

The Brunswick Unitarian Universalist Church, which was destroyed in a fire last June, is scheduled to announce plans for its new building project at the corner of Pleasant and Middle streets on Saturday.

In its capital campaign to raise funds for the reconstruction of the church, the congregation has set a goal of raising $850,000 and breaking ground on the new church by midsummer. The church burned June 6, 2011.

Completion of the project is expected by late spring of 2013, according to a press release from the church.

“We are very excited,” said the Rev. Sylvia Stocker, the church’s minister. “Our building plans take into account the need for accessible meeting space for the wider community.”

Saturday’s event will begin at 4 p.m. at the United Methodist Church at 320 Church Road and cover the announcement of the church’s latest building plans.

In addition, the church will mark its bicentennial. It was founded Jan. 20, 1812.

“We are delighted to be continuing the spirit of progressive religion at this site in downtown Brunswick,” Stocker said.
