BIDDEFORD (AP) — Maine first lady Ann LePage and former first lady Barbara Bush are appearing at an event to promote literacy.

The Barbara Bush Foundation’s Maine Family Literacy Initiative awards ceremony takes place today at the Bush Center at the University of New England. LePage will introduce Bush at the event.

Maine Family Literacy Initiative encourages parents and children to make reading and writing a family activity by doing those activities together on a regular basis. Since 1996, more than 240 family literacy grants have been awarded, totaling $4.3 million.
