FAIRFIELD — One person is dead after a single-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 201 Monday.

Scott Grenier, 29, of Winslow, was driving north around a slight bend in the road when he lost control of his blue Chevy sedan, crossed over the centerline and the southbound lane, left the roadway and struck a sign. From there, the car traveled another 200 feet through tall grass, then entered the woods and struck a tree, according to Fairfield Police Chief John Emery.

Grenier, who was not wearing a seat belt, was killed instantly, Emery said.

Fairfield police and the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash, which happened about 2 p.m. near the intersection of Interstate 95.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, Emery said. Investigators from Somerset County were still on the scene late Monday performing a crash reconstruction.

Emery said Grenier was driving at a very high rate of speed at the time of the crash. There were no apparent skid marks on the pavement.
