BRISTOL — Three people had to be rescued by the Bristol Fire Department and Maine Marine Patrol after their boat ran aground this afternoon near Pemaquid Beach on Johns Bay in Bristol.

Chris Berry, a spokesman for the United States Coast Guard in South Portland, said the boaters called 911 on their cell phone around 3:15 p.m. to let authorities know their craft had run aground on a ledge and was in danger of capsizing.

Berry described the boat as a 22-foot pleasure boat. Firefighters and members of the marine patrol had to remove two men and a woman from the rocks at low tide. They were not injured.

Bristol Fire Chief Paul Leeman said the boat became grounded after its propellor got caught up in a lobster pot buoy, which caused its engine to fail.

The boat will be towed at the next low tide.

The names of the boaters, who are local, were not available.
