Bob Moody recognized

The Rotary Club of Saco Bay recently presented Bob Moody its Paul Harris Fellow award for his mentoring and contributions benefiting area youth and the community at large.

Moody, Saco’s first full-time parks and recreation director, was lauded as an innovator who supported various youth programs.

He is credited with opening local schools to students after hours to support programming and was instrumental in starting the Maremont Little League and the building of a softball field at Young School in Saco.

More recently, Moody is responsible for bringing Trolley Tours of Old Orchard Beach to the area, conducting daily tours of historic Old Orchard Beach and highlighting the town’s history and popular sites.

KENNEBUNK

Ledue scholarship winner

Natalie Suzanne Ledue of Springvale is the recipient of the $1,000 Hartley Lord Scholarship sponsored by the Senior Center at Lower Village.

Ledue, a 2012 Sanford High School graduate, plans to attend Saint Michael’s College as a pre-med student this fall. This scholarship is annually presented to students pursuing a course of study in a field that focuses on the well-being and needs of senior citizens.

School district honors Dobson

The Wells-Ogunquit Community School District recently honored Linda “Cork” Dobson as the district’s Exemplary Volunteer of the Year for 2011-12 during a volunteer appreciation breakfast.

Dobson has been a regular volunteer for kindergarten and fourth-grade students.

FALMOUTH

Extension board members

The Cumberland County Extension Association is seeking volunteers to serve on its board of directors.

The association helps support the University of Maine Cooperative Extension educational programs in areas of 4-H and youth development, agriculture and horticulture, natural resources, family living, food, safety and nutrition. The board comprise up to 28 volunteers and usually meets from 7 to 9 p.m. on the third Wednesday every month at the UMaine Regional Learning Center in Falmouth.

CAPE ELIZABETH

Land Trust triathlon

The Cape Elizabeth Land Trust is holding its second annual triathlon, Tri for Preservation, beginning at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 19 at Crescent Beach State Park.

The triathlon consists of a 500-yard ocean swim along Crescent Beach. Participants then transition to a 14.5-mile, rolling bike course in Cape Elizabeth. The course concludes with a well-marked 3.1-mile run along the shore of Crescent Beach toward Kettle Cove and back along Route 77.

Last year, more than 300 participated in the event.

WEST KENNEBUNK

Donations sought for sale

The Animal Welfare Society is seeking donations of antiques, collectibles, books, jewelry, art and the like for its annual Antiques Show and Sale, set for Aug. 4 and 5 at Kennebunk High School.

Organized by Goosefare Antiques, the event will raise money for the shelter’s operating budget which provides the necessary funds to feed and care for the more than 3,600 animals at the shelter each year.

NORWAY

Ashley Blake campaign intern

Resident and Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School senior Ashley Blake has joined the Oxford County Democrats office as a campaign team intern.

Blake is the first youth to hold that designation. She has volunteered at the Norway office since it opened in late June, assisting with a variety of projects.

The position affords youth with first-hand participation in the political process in internships ranging from 5 to 30 hours per week.  The application process involves filling out a brief application form and completing an interview. 

Similar opportunities are available at the Norway and Mexico Democrats offices.

Oxford County Democrats interns are affiliated with the statewide Maine Democratic Party internship program.
