SCARBOROUGH

The Scarborough Historical Society is holding its annual sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Scarborough Historical Museum, near Dunstan Corner. The fair will feature books, clothing, collectibles, crafts, food, household items and other things. The proceeds from the fair will helps maintain the museum and support its programs.

Native American scholar Dana Benner will present the talk “A Cultural Exploration of Early Native Americans in Scarborough” at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Scarborough Public Library, 48 Gorham Road.

Benner, a historian of Micmac, Penobscot and Piqwacket descent, will share artifacts from his collection and discuss the traditions of the early Native Americans that first inhabited Scarborough — and called it Owascoag.

The public is invited to view a selection of early Native American artifacts from the Scarborough Historical Society and Museum collection, currently on display in the Library. FALMOUTH

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension in Cumberland is offering a series of workshops this month and next about preserving dilly beans, blueberry jam and tomato salsa.

A workshop will be held Tuesday about hot water bath canning and freezing dilly beans. Another workshop will be held Thursday about hot water bath canning and freezing low sugar blueberry jam. Other workshops will be held Aug. 9 and Aug. 23 about canning and freezing tomato salsa

The cost is $10. The workshops are held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the UMaine Cooperative Extension, 75 Clearwater Dr., Suite 104.

Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village on Route 26 is offering a few workshops this Saturday. Betsey-Ann Golon, a Shaker Village herbalist, will give a class from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. about making a wreath with fresh harvested Shaker garden herbs. The cost is $40. Pre-registration required.

A guided nature hike in the Shaker fields and woods, Sabbathday Lake, Aurelia’s Cascade, Loon’s Point and the Old County Road will be held from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The cost is $5 for adults and $2 for children. Kids under 6 years old are free.

The first Westbrook High School Music Alumni Reunion will be held Saturday at the high school. There will be a reception, open house and potluck supper from 4 to 7 p.m., followed by an alumni band concert and continued social time until 9 p.m.. The reunion is open to any alumni who participated in concert band, wind ensemble, marching band, jazz/stage band, color guard or chorus. There is no cost to attend.

The Camden Public Library, at 55 Main St., will host a number of events this week.

On Tuesday, “Beach Reads” with the Sisters in Crime panel of mystery writers including Vicki Doudera, Kate Flora and Janis Bolster will be held at 6:30 p.m. while a viewing of the film “A River Runs Through It” is screened at the Camden Amphitheatre at 8:15 p.m.

On Wednesday, guitarist Stefan Low will perform at noon at the amphitheatre.

On Thursday, the acoustic trio Meteora also will perform at 7 p.m. at the amphitheatre.

“Look Good Feel Better,” a free program offering beauty tips for women who are undergoing cancer treatment, will be offered from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday at the Cancer Care Center of York County. A trained volunteer cosmetologist will teach each attendees how to cope with skin changes and hair loss by offering practice make-up techniques with skin care products and information on free wigs and turbans. Attendees will receive complimentary cosmetic products to take home.

Polar researcher and Bigelow Senior Research Scientist Dr. Paty Matrai will lead a Cafe Scientifique discussion titled “Anatomy of an Arctic Cloud-Sea Ice, Aerosols, and Microgels,” at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Boothbay Harbor Opera House at 86 Townsend Ave.

Matrai will discuss her research marine microgels over the Arctic Ocean and the influence of marine algae on the Arctic climate system.

Matrai leads a research team in Bigelow’s Air-Sea Interactions Laboratory, and has been collaborating on the study with colleagues at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, the Department of Meteorology in Stockholm University, and the Department of Environment in Madrid.
