Bowdoin College professor emerita June Vail will explore the architectural career of Felix Arnold Burton during a walking tour on Sunday at 1 p.m. The tour will begin at Pejepscot Historical Society, 159 Park Row, Brunswick. According to a news release, Burton was a 1907 Bowdoin graduate descended from Brunswick’s Larrabee family. He designed and remodeled houses, including his own historic home, as well as college buildings on Federal Street, Maine Street, the college campus, and elsewhere in town. During his time in Brunswick and in Boston — independently and with the firm Allen and Collens — Burton became one of Maine’s most prominent architects. Admission is $2 in advance, $4 at the door, and free for PHS members. Pictured above is the former Brunswick High School on Federal Street. The school became Hawthorne Elementary School when a new high school was built on Spring Street in the late 1930s, according to a webpage about the Brunswick Women’s History Trail (http://bit.ly/MR22L0). In the early 1990s, the high school moved to its current location on Maquoit Road. The Spring Street building was eventually razed and replaced by Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementary School.
