PORTLAND — U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree is asking Canadian authorities to provide police escorts for Maine lobster trucks following protests at processing plants over cheap lobster from the United States.
The Maine Democrat wrote to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Thursday to request protection for the trucks. She says drivers bringing lobster from Maine need to feel safe, and that Canadian authorities haven’t done enough to respond to Canadian fishermen who have tried to stop trucks delivering lobster from Maine.
A Canadian judge on Thursday granted an injunction to prevent lobster fishermen in New Brunswick from blockading processing plants.
Canadian lobstermen say the low price of Maine lobsters is driving down prices in Canada and stealing their livelihood. Last week fishermen in New Brunswick prevented trucks from delivering Maine lobsters to processors.
