PORTLAND (AP) — The Maine State Housing Authority has voted to allow tenants in subsidized housing to continue to use and grow medical marijuana in their homes for another six months.
The unanimous vote Tuesday places a 180-day moratorium on a new policy the authority enacted last month banning medical marijuana use.
Commissioners have been concerned because medical marijuana use is illegal under federal law, and they worry allowing it could put federal housing funds at risk.
An attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine told the commissioners that federal guidance already makes it clear the authority doesn’t risk losing federal funds by permitting medical marijuana use.
