YARMOUTH — Richard Freeman Groves, 86, of Yarmouth, died Oct. 19 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough after an extended illness. He was born Feb. 1, 1926,  to Freeman S. and Dora F. (Goldrup) Groves.

He attended Cumberland and Yarmouth schools and after being drafted into the Army during World War II, he returned to graduate from North Yarmouth Academy. He earned an associate’s in business and worked in the banking and finance business until his retirement in 1988. 

He was an avid gardener and woodworker. He loved taking his boat out on Casco Bay and spending time on Cousins Island with his family. He was a Mason, a 50-year member of the First Parish Congregational Church of Yarmouth and belonged to the American Legion and Yarmouth Historical Society. After his retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, Carla, to Florida in the winter and most recently spent time at Sebago Lake in the summer. 

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carla M. (Guimond) Groves; four children, Richard F. Groves Jr., Amy E. Ward, William M. Groves and Patricia J. Groves; six grandchildren, Kimberly M. Ward, Katherine E. Wilson, Daniel W. Groves, Christina M. Groves, Steven M. Groves, and Samuel R. Groves; and a sister, Miriam E. Rand. 

He was predeceased by two sisters, Margaret I. Erskine and Ruth Blow.

A graveside service was held Oct. 24 at Riverside Cemetery in Yarmouth.
