BIDDEFORD – An overtime goal lifted third-seeded Nichols (13-7) over the second-seeded Nor’easters (10-9) in a Commonwealth Coast Conference field hockey semifinal at Biddeford.
Emily Koehler had converted a penalty stroke for UNE with 11:35 remaining in regulation to knot it at 3-3.
UNE’s first two goals came from Casey Clark and Laura Egounis, while Kaitlyn Warren had nine saves for the Nor’easters.
BRIDGEWATER ST. 3, SOUTHERN MAINE 0: The second-seeded Bears (17-2) shut out the seventh-seeded Huskies (9-12) in a Little East Conference quarterfinal at Bridgewater, Mass.
Kayla Kennedy made eight saves for the Huskies.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
WESTERN CONN. 2, SOUTHERN MAINE 0: Western Connecticut scored just 18 seconds in as it recorded a first-round win over the sixth-seeded Huskies (3-14) at Danbury, Conn.
Katie Cobb made four saves for the Huskies.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
SMCC, 77, UNITY 25: Rogetta Donalson scored 13 points, and Nyalieb Deng and Esther Palmieri each chipped in 10 as the Seawolves (3-0) handled the Rams at South Portland.
Five other Seawolves had at least six points led by Tiana Burton and Maria Veino with nine apiece.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
SMCC 89, UNITY 61: Jon Amabile had 15 points and the Seawolves (3-0) outscored the Rams 48-32 in the second half for the win at South Portland.
Tyheem Simon had 12 points and Emmanuel Donalson finished with 11 for SMCC.
FOOTBALL
MIAMI 30, VIRGINIA TECH 12: Stephen Morris threw for two early touchdowns, both set up by Virginia Tech (4-5, 2-3) miscues, and the Hurricanes (5-4, 4-2) took a step forward in the chase for the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Coastal Division title.
Duke Johnson had a 7-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter and finished with 217 all-purpose yards for Miami.
