Operation Christmas Child National Collection Week will accept shoe boxes that are filled with toys, school supplies and hygiene items for needy children in more than 100 countries overseas. The project is sponsored by Samaritan’s Purse and is the largest of its kind in the world. Anyone can drop off a filled shoe box at the Portland-area collection site at Stroudwater Baptist Church, 1729 Congress St., Portland. Other

Islands Community Church on Bailey Island has offered a challenge appeal to encourage donations to aid Portland’s Grace Street Ministry, which has had no income from 23 grant requests this year and was facing closure. Islands Community Church has a long relationship with Grace Street pastors Mair Honan and Elizabeth Peterson and church members have donated $2,000 that will be used to match additional donations.
