HARPSWELL — Helen M. (Barthelemy) Freeman, age 90, of Harpswell, died peacefully at her home on May 5, 2013, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Arlington, MA, Nov. 29, 1922, the daughter of Walter P. and Myrtle (Ward) Barthelemy, and much-loved sister of, Nancy R. Barthelemy, (predeceased Dec. 29, 2003) of Pittsburgh PA. Helen attended Arlington schools and was a 1940 graduate of Arlington H.S. Following graduation, she worked in Boston before marrying Walter (Bill) C. Freeman (predeceased Aug. 16, 1990) on April 6, 1944 at the Navy Chapel in Charleston, SC. As a Navy wife Helen and Bill raised their family in Lexington, MA, Newport, RI, and Charleston, SC before settling in Brunswick in 1959. In 1976 they moved to Harpswell to live out their lives together on Long Reach.

Helen was active in the League of Women Voters, St Paul’s Church, as a member of the Brunswick school committee, president of the Auxiliary at Regional Memorial Hospital, and member of board of trustees and corporator of Mid Coast Hospital in the 60’s and 70’s. She was a member of the OBYC from 1975 to 1998 and spent many summers sailing off the coast of Maine with her husband, Bill. Not only was she an avid reader and bridge player, she loved playing tennis and playing golf, continuing both, well into her 70’s she will be remembered for her quick wit and zest of life, her loyalty to her friends, and her love of family.

She is survived by her family, son, David W. Freeman, and wife Joyce of Cape Elizabeth, daughter Nancy L. Freeman of Cape Cod, daughter Helen (Lynn) M. Allerding of Windsor, daughter Beth L. Hoium and husband, Vincent, of Moyock, NC, her grandson William M. Freeman, wife Jodi Hanelt, great-grandchildren Elizabeth J. and Felix T. Thomas of Maynard, MA, granddaughter Jessica Freeman of Hendersonville, NC.

The family would like to thank CHANS of Brunswick for all their kindness and caring during Helens illness.

A celebration of her life will be held at Cranberry Horn Cemetery, Harpswell, ME, on June 8, 2013 at 11 a.m.
