GORHAM – Nick Grady went 4 for 4 and drove in five runs to lead top-ranked University of Southern Maine in a 22-9 rout of second-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University Friday in the Little East Conference Tournament.

The Huskies (36-7) led 22-0 after six innings and did not allow ECSU (30-12-1) a run until the eighth inning. Jake Glauser, Chris Bernard and Tucker White all finished with three RBI. White and Forrest Chadwick each scored four times.

Starter Shyler Scates was credited with the win, pitching five innings, giving up just two hits and striking out two. The Huskies spread the workload among four pitchers for the final four innings.

The Huskies chased the Warriors starting pitcher Brent Pelella from the mound in the first inning. He faced five batters without recording an out and surrendered four hits and five earned runs.

WESLEYAN 8, BOWDOIN 6: Sam Goodwin-Boyd and Jon Dennett each drove in three runs as the Cardinals (24-13-1) broke the game open with a six-run third inning and held on against the Polar Bears (23-14) in the opening round of the NESCAC tournament at Middletown, Conn.

Trailing 8-3, the Polar Bears responded with three runs in the top of the seventh behind RBI singles from Luke Regan and Sam Canales.

Bowdoin had the potential tying run at the plate in the seventh, but was held hitless over the final 21/3 innings by Jimmy Hill.

Regan finished with two hits, two RBI and two runs for Bowdoin, which will face Trinity in an elimination game Saturday at 10:30 a.m.


ST. JOSEPH’S 4, LESLEY 0: Rae-Marie Copen threw a one-hitter to lead fifth-seeded St. Joseph’s in the first elimination game of the NCAA Regional at Boston.

Copan retired the first 18 battters and took a perfect game to the top of the seventh before Lesley senior Emily Mangiaratti singled. Copan extended her scoreless inning streak to 29 innings with the shutout.

Melissa Mayhew hit a two-out, two-run single in the fourth to put the Monks ahead. Lindsay Moore added a two-run double in the fifth for St. Joe’s.

St. Joseph’s plays again at 2 p.m. Saturday.
