The South Portland/Cape Elizabeth TRIAD, will be hosting a Senior Driving Class for senior citizens. Upon completion, the senior citizen is eligible for a reduction on their car insurance. If a senior citizen has taken the class more than three years ago, they need to take the class again. The cost is $12 for AARP members (must bring AARP membership card) and $14 for non-members. The class size will be limited to 20 students. The Saturday, Aug. 31, class is being held 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Cape Elizabeth Fire Department on 2 Jordan Way. Refreshments will be provided. Southern Maine Agency on Aging will be offering “Putting the Puzzle Together,” a four-part education series for people assisting older adult family and friends, at the SMAA office in Scarborough, on Tuesdays, Sept. 3, 10, 17 and 24, from 5:15-7:15 p.m. Sessions include information about older adult health, community resources, living options, problem solving and legal issues. Participants should plan to attend all four sessions. There is no charge, but pre-registration is required. Wednesday, Sept. 4

The South Portland Parks and Recreation Department, will be sponsoring a classic car show from 4:30 p.m. until sunset at Bug Light Park. (Rain date: Wednesday, Sept. 11.) More than 50 classic and vintage cars and motorcycles will be on display. This event is free to the public. Food will be sold. Prizes, including a 50/50 raffle and a chance to win a pair of tickets to New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Boston Bruins tickets, are also part of the event. Sept. 6-7

Auditions for Maine State Ballet’s “The Nutcracker,” will be held Friday, Sept. 6, and Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Maine State Ballet Studios, 348 U.S. Route 1, in Falmouth. The auditions are open to dancers from any school in Greater Portland. Hopefuls must be able to commit to several performance dates and Saturday rehearsals in November and December. Join best-selling Maine children’s author, Lynn Plourde, for a reading from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. of her new picture book, “You’re Wearing That to School?!” Kids will have a chance to talk to Lynn, ask questions, and have a book signed after the reading. The Cumberland County Republican Committee is hosting a benefit Trap Shoot at Scarborough Fish & Game Association, 21 Fish & Game Lane, Scarborough. Check-in is at 8 a.m. Shooting is 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Lunch is noon-2 p.m. Entry is $65 before Sept. 1 and $75 after Aug. 31. Prizes awarded. The Robbie Foundation, based in Scarborough, will hold its first annual 5K race, 1.5-mile walk and kids fun run in Back Cove in Portland. Registration starts at 6:45 a.m. with the race and walk starting at 8:30 a.m. There will be awards for a variety of categories including first male and female overall. All proceeds will go to provide adaptive equipment, therapy treatments and other services, that are not covered by insurance, for children and youth with developmental disabilities in Maine. Sunday, Sept. 15

The Quest for the Best Second Annual Pie/Cupcake Contest, to benefit the March of Dimes will be held at Kitchen & Cork in Cabela’s Plaza in Scarborough. Anyone 16 or older can enter the pie-baking contest, which is co-sponsored by King Arthur Flour, and anyone 9 or older can enter the cupcake baking contest. However, if you want to eat pie, they need you, too. After the judging, all of the homemade pies are available for sale, either by the slice or whole. Pies/cupcakes can be dropped off under the tent outside of Kitchen & Cork between 9-11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held indoors beside Kitchen & Cork.
