SANFORD — Sophomore running back Peter Hegarty scored on runs of 6 yards and 1 yard to help lead Sanford to a 49-14 win over Massabesic in a regular-season finale at Cobb Stadium.
The game was rescheduled from Friday night because of a threat of violence.
Sanford led 28-0 by halftime. Quarterback Chase Eldridge started the scoring with a 9-yard keeper up the middle. Hegarty used his quickness to elude Massabesic defenders for his touchdowns. Eldridge completed the first-half scoring with an 11-yard pass to wide receiver John Morgan.
Sanford (4-4) opened the second half with a touchdown drive starting deep in its territory and ending with Nick Love’s 1-yard run.
The game was marred by penalties. Two pass interference penalties on Sanford helped Massabesic (1-7) drive to a first-and-goal at the 3. Running back Michael Risti scored from the 1 for Massabesic’s first touchdown.
Sanford went to its bench and continued scoring. Ed Michetti broke through the line, cut left and outran the defense 67 yards down the sideline for a touchdown. Alex Grondin added a 30-yard touchdown run to complete Sanford’s scoring.
Connor McGehee kicked seven extra points.
Massabesic reserve quarterback Trevor Walton passed 14 yards to Noah Gerry for the final touchdown.
