Portland distiller introduces new rye whiskey

Gunpowder Rye Whiskey, a Maryland-style rye whiskey made by New England Distilling, is now available. Ned Wight of the distillery said the rye is brewed from local grains and distilled in New England Distilling’s traditional copper pot still. After double distillation, the whiskey spends a year maturing in American white oak barrels. New England Distilling was founded by Wight in Portland’s Riverside neighborhood in 2011. Wight is a sixth-generation distiller with roots tying to the heyday of Maryland rye whiskey production. With demand for its spirits increasing, New England Distilling has doubled its capacity with the recent purchase of an additional 250-gallon pot still. New England Distilling is open for tours daily. Giving Back

The University of Maine Mid-Coast Alumni executive committee earned more than $10,500 over the last five years, which has been donated to the University for textbook awards for mid-coast Maine university students. The alumni earned the money through bean suppers, concerts, raffles and donations. The textbook awards are presented to juniors and seniors who meet university financial aid requirements and winners are selected by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

New Hires, Promotions and Appointments

The North Yarmouth Business Association elected Mary Conroy as president, Brian Bartlett as vice president, Marilyn Matthews as secretary and Leslie Taisey as treasurer Jan. 27

Karen Jones, of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, completed needed requirements to earn the Accredited Buyer’s Representation designation. A member of the National Association of Realtors, Jones joins more than 40,000 professionals who are on the cutting edge with this award, which focuses on serving the needs of buyer clients.

Recognition

Highland Green Director of Marketing and Sales Will Honan will be a featured speaker at 50+ Lifestyle Central at the International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas, Nev. Feb. 6. Highland Green, located in Topsham, has also been selected as finalist for three awards at the show.

Mid-Coast Hospital achieved Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, an honor given to fewer than 7 percent of hospitals nationwide. The recognition attests to the hospital’s ongoing commitment of delivering high quality, excellent nursing care to its patients. Magnet designation is the highest and most prestigious international distinction a health care organization or hospital can receive for nursing excellence and outstanding patient care.

Sophia Herdrich, 7th grade student at Falmouth Middle School, has taken the first step to becoming an internationally recognized artist by winning a local competition sponsored by the Falmouth Lions Club. Herdrich’s poster is among more than 450,000 entries being submitted worldwide in the annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the program to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people everywhere. Falmouth Lions Club Peace Poster Chairman Aaron Tufts said he was impressed by the expression and creativity of the students at the Falmouth Middle School.
