Portland distiller introduces new rye whiskey

Gunpowder Rye Whiskey, a Maryland-style rye whiskey made by New England Distilling, is now available. Ned Wight of the distillery said the rye is brewed from local grains and distilled in New England Distilling’s traditional copper pot still. After double distillation, the whiskey spends a year maturing in American white oak barrels. New England Distilling was founded by Wight in Portland’s Riverside neighborhood in 2011. Wight is a sixth-generation distiller with roots tying to the heyday of Maryland rye whiskey production. With demand for its spirits increasing, New England Distilling has doubled its capacity with the recent purchase of an additional 250-gallon pot still. New England Distilling is open for tours daily.
