The storm is now mostly over with snow totals 6-8 inches quite common in southern Maine. A few spots hit more than the 8 inch mark with areas to the east and north of Augusta seeing the least amount of snow. Many ski areas saw up to 8 inches of fresh powder for one of the first significant snowfalls in a few weeks.

There will be a bit of snow through 8 or 9 PM, but the bulk of the accumulation is over from Portland south.  North of Portland there could be another inch.

 

If you are clearing your driveway or car now, just be aware there might will be a coating up to re-clear in the morning.

Temperatures will fall to cold levels overnight with single number in the north and near 10F at the coast.  Skies will clear and you will see a setting moon in the west late at night.  If you are up before sunrise, notice Venus in the eastern sky about where the sun rises.

 

I am expecting lots of sunshine for the next three days.  There will be some clouds mixing with the sunshine at times as temperatures remain cold only in the upper 20s for the balance of the week.

Extended forecast

 

The next storm threat is Sunday afternoon through Monday, but the threat is diminishing.  There will be a big storm developing in the ocean, however it appears it will just brush by to our south.  The amount of snow could be near zero if the storm does remain hundreds of miles off the coast. While the latest models keep most of the storm out to sea, there has been a trend this winter to have the models forecast a storm a week in advance, take it out to sea 3 to 5 days ahead and then bring it back.  I am not ready to say with 100% confidence this isn’t going to hit the area, but my comfort level is growing this one will be a miss.  More over the next few days.
