SANFORD — Justin Kennedy from Margaret Chase Smith Elementary School in Sanford was recently chosen as the winner of the Maine State National Bonnie Plants Cabbage Program.

Each year, Bonnie Plants delivers oversized cabbage plants to third-grade classrooms across the country. The children can then cultivate, nurture and grow giant cabbages up to 40 pounds. One student from each participating state is awarded a $1,000 scholarship toward education. The winner is selected by the Commission of Agriculture and is based upon size and appearance of the cabbage.

Bonnie Plants produces vegetables and herb plants in North America and has 72 stations across the country. The program was launched in 2002 and had more than 1.5 million participants this year.
