RANGELEY — The Falmouth High girls and boys successfully defended their Class A Nordic skiing championships under sunny skies Thursday at the Rangeley Lakes Trail Center.
Mt. Ararat senior Sam Wood and Mt. Blue senior Sarah Wade were the individual winners of Thursday’s 5-kilometer freestyle races.
The overall team titles will not be decided until next week’s Alpine championships.
Falmouth’s boys trailed Leavitt by two points following Wednesday’s classical race. Led by runner-up Gabe Mahoney, who finished 12 seconds behind Wood, Falmouth grabbed five of the top 13 spots in a field of nearly 60 skiers.
Falmouth’s two-day total of 72 points was 20 better than Leavitt, which held off Mt. Blue (98) for second place.
In the girls’ competition, Falmouth ran away with the title as Anna Morin, Gabby Farrell and London Bernier placed 3-4-5. Falmouth finished with 45 points to 94 for Mt. Blue and 124 for Leavitt.
