BIDDEFORD — Alicia Brown scored a game-high 15 points and also pulled down 11 rebounds to lead top-ranked University of New England to a 58-43 women’s basketball victory over No. 8 Wentworth in a Commonwealth Coast quarterfinal.

Kelly Coleman added 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Nor’easters, who led 26-20 at halftime and scored the first seven points of the second half.

UNE (24-2, 18-1) hosts fourth-seeded Salve Regina in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Thursday. Wentworth closed its season 8-17, 5-14.

 

SOUTHERN MAINE 53, UMASS-BOSTON 45: Rebecca Knight scored a game-high 15 points to pace the second-seeded Huskies (19-7) as they pulled away from the seventh-ranked Beacons (13-13) in a Little East quarterfinal at Gorham.

Hannah Fenwick added 11 rebounds for the Huskies, who went on a 14-2 run during an eight-minute stretch in the second half to break up a 29-29 tie.

USM advances to face third-seeded Eastern Connecticut in the semifinals Friday at Rhode Island College.

 

ST. JOSEPH’S 63, LASELL 50: Abby Young and Morgan Cahill scored 14 points apiece to pace the second-seeded Monks (21-5, 10-1) as they went on a 17-8 run over the final seven minutes to pull away from the seventh-ranked Lasers (12-14, 5-6) in a GNAC quarterfinal at Standish.

Young also grabbed 14 rebounds and Mackenzie Dufour added 13 points for the Monks, who will host third-seeded Rivier in a GNAC semifinal.

Leading 46-42, St. Joseph’s took control with a 13-0 run that was capped by a Cahill jumper with 3:06 left in the game.

ST. JOSEPH’S 80, SUFFOLK 72: Steve Simonds scored 17 of his team-high 21 points in the second half to help the second-ranked Monks (17-9, 15-3) hold off the seventh-seeded Rams (9-17, 6-12) in a GNAC quarterfinal at Standish.

Sam Nwadike, who scored a game-high 25 points, gave the Rams a 55-52 lead with 9:12 left to play. The Monks responded with a 14-1 run.

Matt Medeiros added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Monks, who will host third-seeded Johnson & Wales in the semifinals on Thursday

 

R.I. COLLEGE 74, SOUTHERN MAINE 66: The second-seeded Anchormen (18-8) took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Michael Palumbo with 9:17 left and went 10 for 10 from the foul line down the stretch to hold off the seventh-ranked Huskies (9-17) in a Little East quarterfinal at Providence, R.I.

Tyler Penney scored a game-high 23 points to pace the Huskies and Cole Libby added 14 points, six rebounds and five assists.
