Republicans play host to wine tasting Sunday

Cumberland County Republicans will host a wine tasting from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Cork and Barrel, 204 Route 1.

The cost is $30 per person and includes light hors d’ouevres. To sign up, email events@ccrcme.com.

Baking expert to teach European specialties

Go on a baking tour of Europe with Mitch Stamm, associate instructor at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I., when he visits Stone Turtle Baking School on March 21 and 22.

Stamm, author of “The Pastry Chef’s Apprentice” (Quarry Books), was named one of the Top 10 Bread Bakers of 2011 by Dessert Professional in 2011.

In the class, Stamm will make a number of sweet and savory breads and pastries from Germany, Italy, Spain, France and Portugal. Included will be burro e noci, an Italian bread that uses ground walnuts as a substitute for a portion of the flour, and butter kuchen, a classic German pastry.

The class will run from noon to 5 p.m. March 21 and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 22. The cost is $325, which includes lunch on March 22.

The class is limited to 10 students, but there are still a couple of spots open. Call 459-0567 to register.

Vinland dinner to feature Icelandic tasting menu

In honor of the pagan god Thor, Vinland will host an eight-course tasting menu inspired by Icelandic traditions from 5:30 to 10 p.m. March 13.

The dinner will be paired with beers from Rising Tide and Allagash. Dinner costs $65 per person, and beer pairings are $25.

There will be two seatings, one between 5:30 and 6 p.m. and the second between 8:15 and 8:45 p.m. Reservations are strongly encouraged.

LeRoux classes resume with chicken parm faceoff

Now that winter is almost over, LeRoux will relaunch its Thursday evening cooking classes with chef and staff member Matt Burnham.

In the first class, to be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 20, Burnham and Suzie Rephan, manager of the store, will make two versions of a “Chicken Parmesan With Homemade Pasta Throwdown.” Rephan will prepare a traditional take on the dish, and Burnham will demonstrate his one-pan version.

The class costs $35 and includes take-home recipes. To register, call 553-7665.

Vietti wines will pair with four-course dinner

Vignola Cinque Terre will host a four-course dinner of Piedmontese fare paired with traditional wines of the Vietti winery at 6 p.m. March 20.

Wines to be poured include Vietti’s 2012 Arneis, 2009 Perbacco Nebbiolo, and several single vineyard Barolos of notable vintages. The “prized gem” of the dinner, according to the restaurant, will be the 2009 Lazzarito Barolo, the most famous “Cru” in the Serralunga vineyards. They’ll also be pouring the 2008 and 2006 vintages of Castiglione Barolo.

The event will be co-hosted by Erica Archer of Wine Wise Tours. Dinner will conclude with Vietti’s 2012 Moscato D’Asti.

A reception begins at 6 p.m., with the dinner following at 6:30 p.m.

The prce is $120 per person.
