I heard on the news June 11 that Gov. LePage has hatched yet another plot to treat immigrants shabbily. This although his ancestors, just like mine, came here as immigrants themselves. He chooses to ignore the fact that the people coming here now are escaping from violence and death threats in their home countries.

Moreover, I had to turn to the second page of the Local & State section June 12 to find any mention of this immoral action by the governor (“Maine to halt funds for illegal immigrants’ aid”). Do we as a society think so little of these new residents that a proposal to treat them illegally only gets mentioned on Page C2?

Thankfully, this paper redeemed itself admirably with great coverage June 13 (“Cutoff of Maine funds for ‘illegals’ creates turmoil” and “Portland’s immigrants fear losing food, place to live”).

“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free . . .” I long for the day when this country will honor our heritage by treating the newest arrivals with fairness and dignity.
