Police have identified the man who drowned Sunday afternoon in a lake at Wassamki Springs Campground in Scarborough.

Giot Nguyen, 45, of Portland was swimming with a friend to a small island in the middle of the lake when he began to have difficulty at about 2:20 pm. He was not wearing a life jacket, Gorham police Sgt. Daniel Young said in a news release.

Young said the man’s body was recovered from the water by family members and witnesses and taken to the island. They performed CPR on the victim while he was on the island, and he was transferred back to the campground, Young said.

Gorham and Scarborough emergency responders tried unsuccessfully to revive the man.

Wassamki Springs Campground’s property is located in both Scarborough and Gorham.
