RICHMOND — Gerald Rellands “Spike” Guiou, 89, of Richmond, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014, at Togus VA Hospice.

Born Aug. 16, 1929, in Presque Isle, the son of Lillian Grant Guiou and Clowes P. Guiou, he was the last survivor of a family of 18 siblings.

Spike was a member of the Richmond American Legion Post 132, Order of Masons, Kora Shrine, Steel Workers Union and Sportsman’s Club of Richmond.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, most outdoor activities, cooking, playing cribbage, poker and particularly activities with his grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Spike briefly worked with the railroad before entering the Navy at age 18. He served five years. Following his military service he worked a short time as a carpenter before joining the Steel Workers’ Union. He was an iron worker for 30 years.

He was predeceased by 17 siblings; wife, Goldie; and stepdaughter Helen Sutton.

Spike is survived by loving partner Dorothy Wallace of Richmond; son, Keith of Richmond; stepchildren, Gail Harrison of Lexington, Ky., Gary Williams of Ashland, Va., and Ernest Williams of Mystic, Conn.; two grandsons, Adam Guiou of South Portland and Michael Guiou of New York City; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to visit from noon-1 p.m. on Sept. 5, at Kincer Funeral Home, Richmond, followed by a graveside service at Maine Veterans Cemetery, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta, at 2 p.m.

Donations may be made to the American Legion Post 132 Scholarship fund in memory of Gerald “Spike” Guiou and Helen Sutton.
