BATH

Police say a bat found in north Bath week ago has tested positive for rabies, and encourages pet owners to make sure their pets have been vaccinated.

Bath Police Department’s animal control officer Ann Hartford was called to a North Bath residence on Friday, Sept. 5 for a report of a bat on the ground, unable to fly. According to a press release issued Thursday by Bath Police Department, Hartford captured the bat and brought it to Coastal Veterinary Care Center where it was euthanized.

The bat was then brought to the Health and Environmental Testing Lab (HETL) in Augusta for testing. On Tuesday, Hartford was notified it tested positive for rabies.

“There were no exposures to any domestic animals that we are aware of,” the release states. However, “The Bath Police Department urges all pet owners to ensure that your pet’s vaccination are up to date.”

Anyone seeing an animal in obvious distress is urged to call the Bath Police Department at 443-5563.
