When Sen. Susan Collins voted with her Republican colleagues to shut down the federal government in 2013, she should have realized the consequences for Maine: delayed veterans benefits payments, delayed low-income housing assistance payments and closing of Acadia National Park and $16 million in lost revenue.

Sadly, while Ted Cruz read children’s stories to an empty Congress, the “Party of No!” continued on its obstructionist path. Republicans, including Collins, oppose any policy supported by the president of the United States. Period.

No wonder that Congress plummets in the polls, but why do we not hold them accountable?

Advertising that Collins finally voted to stop the government shutdown she helped create confirms that we need Democrat Shenna Bellows in Washington for Maine.

And soon, like this November. Her integrity, balance and compromise are essential for Congress to get back to doing the people’s business in Washington.
