Gorham’s retiring police chief plans to go out in style.

The police department announced Tuesday that Police Chief Ronald W. Shepard will tour the Gorham community – in a police cruiser – one final time on Nov. 4.

Lt. Christopher E. Sanborn said Shepard will leave the Gorham Public Safety Building around 1 p.m. to begin his final sweep of the town.

The police chief will be honored with a police cruiser lineup on the Route 112 bypass between routes 25 and 202 around 2 p.m. This section of the bypass will be shut down from noon until 4 p.m. The lineup will feature police vehicles from departments throughout Greater Portland.

Shepard has spent his entire career in law enforcement with the town of Gorham and has earned the recognition as being the town’s longest-serving police chief, having been appointed to that post on Sept. 27, 1995.

Shepard joined the police department on Aug. 31, 1972. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 1976 and then to lieutenant in 1986.

“He has worked his way up through the ranks,” Sanborn said.

Anyone who wants to attend the event on the bypass is being asked to arrive from the Route 202 end.
