SOUTH BERWICK — Sophomore Maddie Eastman scored three goals Tuesday as third-seeded Marshwood ousted 10th-seeded Cheverus 5-1 in the Western Class A field hockey semifinals.

“When you’re a (lower seed) you eventually run into a team that is just more skilled than you,” said Cheverus Coach Amy Ashley.

“You can play with heart, you can play as a team, but eventually it comes down to stick skills. They’re just a better team than us and you have to give them credit.”

Marshwood (14-2) will play at No. 1 Scarborough in Thursday’s regional final.

Eastman came off the bench early and wasted little time making an impact, scoring with 20:06 left in the first half.

“I was looking for someone that’s not going to care and get her stick down and just be in the right place. Lindsey (Poirier) sends some nice balls right to the corner and if you’re there, you have an opportunity. She’s been in our thought process because the last few practices she’s stepped it up and shown she can do it. She’s a little fighter,” said Marshwood Coach Lisa Truesdale.

“When they scored that first goal we went back to being the old Cheverus, when we went on the eight-game losing streak and tried to do it individually,” said Ashley.

Eastman struck again seven minutes later and completed the hat trick with 19:08 left in the second half.

All three goals were off redirections at the post.

“I’ve really been working hard at practice and playing post so it’s exciting to be able to play,” said Eastman.

“I like playing with Maddie because you hit the ball to the post and you know it’s going in. She’s always there, she’s aggressive, and she plays the quickest defense off of the turnaround,” said Poirier.

Emily Michaud inched the Stags (7-8-2) closer with 9:11 left in the second half.

“I am really proud of our team, how we fought back and got that late goal. I was really hoping we would cut it to one goal after that but anytime it gets close you know that Lindsey is going to take over the game,” said Ashley.

Marshwood put the game out of reach with 6:07 left in the second half as Poirier launched a rocket from the perimeter to give the Hawks a 4-1 lead. Hannah Costin added a goal with 3:59 left.

Marshwood outshot Cheverus 13-1 and held a 16-2 corner advantage.

“They swarmed us at every point on the field. We couldn’t get anything started,” said Ashley.

Poirier notched two assists to go with her goal.
