BOSTON — A high-ranking Boston Fire Department official has been indicted on fraud and theft charges for allegedly stealing almost $50,000 from the city to pay personal credit card expenses and buy himself a television and furniture.

Edward Scigliano IV of Kingston was indicted Thursday on charges of procurement fraud and larceny. He is scheduled to be arraigned Nov. 25.

Authorities allege the 45-year-old district chief who ran the fire academy ran two schemes between 2008 and 2011 that involved directing vendors that do business with the city to pay his bills and buy him items that he claimed were for city use.

Scigliano, who’s been on paid leave since July 2012, was placed on unpaid leave Thursday.

His home number is not in service and it’s unclear if he has a lawyer.
